Dónde andabas anoche?

Compositor: Ignacio Piñeiro
Estilo: Guaguancó
Grabación: Carlos Embales, “Rumbero Mayor”

Avísale a la vecina
Que aquí estoy yo
Que venga para que aprecie dulce cantar
Después no quiero que diga
Que di la rumba y no la invité
Que venga para que aprecie sonoridad

¿Dónde andabas anoche?
Qué bien te busqué
(bis)
Recorrí La Habana y no te encontré

Me fuí con mamita
y el Ronco seguí
Me gustó su canto
y con el me fuí

Coro: Ven, ven, Iroko, ven, ven

Coro: A, Iroko ven, ven

In an old vinyl called "Music from Cuba - 1909-1037 - Hot Dance Music from Cuba" (vol.16) gathering old cuban 78" (see Yoyo's blog), an instrumental danzón from 1919 called "Dónde Andaba Anoche" can be heard, crediting an "A.Brito" (obviously Alfredo Brito "El Rubio", flautista y compositor de danzones) as the author… That fact means that popular rumba could be much older than the Ignacio Piñeiro version. Piñeiro was 21 in 1919. When did he wrote his version? Piñeiro was about ten years older than Brito. The fact that Brito wrote a separate intro and tema of the danzón version is sufficient for him to leave his name under that particular version… But is Piñeiro the real author of that rumba?

Piñeiro was 41 in 1919 actually. According to Oropesa, his only biographer thus far, he wrote it in 1906.
